Award Winner : Metric Modular
Architectural Excellence : The two 10' x 40' buildings have an Olympic Legacy - they were originally manufactured in 2009 and used as commentator booths at the mountain venues for the international media during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. In their new role as a library building, the modules provide maximum natural light to a unique learning environment through the same large windows that once provided an unobstructed view of the Games. Bookshelves now line the walls without windows in one module, and the second module provides multi-purpose space for a conference room.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The reuse of these buildings is a great example of the sustainability, reusability and opportunity potential of modular buildings. By incorporating a truss roof design with an internal corridor, the building now becomes more energy efficient and better suited to the environmental conditions. This building also highlights the advantages and cost savings that make a modular project more feasible in a remote location over site-built construction. By minimizing the challenges of traditional construction in a remote setting (specifically, availability of trades, shipping of materials and disposing of construction waste), modular construction is the more cost effective solution.

Production Start Date : 10/5/2009
Project Location City : Williams Lake
Project Location State Name : BC
Technical Innovation : The modules were shipped to a remote site, more than 150 kilometers from the nearest town, and were installed eight feet apart allowing for a site-built corridor to maximize the usable space and keep the entrance protected from the harsh weather elements that are prevalent for much of the year. A temporary block and pad wood foundation was used as the building support. A trussed roof was installed over the buildings and the corridor to manage the snow load and prolong the life of the buildings.
