Architectural Excellence : Constellation Brands is a leading beer and wine company to some of the best known California beers and wines. The company was in need of a sensory center that would allow for them to test the psychological and physiological effects of wine as well as help them develop competitive strategies through research and testing. Constellation Brands sought a smaller scale facility that mimicked the state-of-the-art UC Davis sensory building. A 3,161 square foot facility was designed to include 20 isolated tasting booths, a preparation area, a controlled observation room and training room. The building also needed to accommodate administrative staff and was equipped with two offices, an IT room, kitchen, two restrooms, and storage.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Constellation Brands was looking for a cost-effective method, and modular construction was the perfect fit for their needs. Not only did modular construction fit within the customer’s budget, but it fit within their expected time frame. Traditional construction would have put Constellation Brand’s in their building well over 12 months, while modular construction allowed for occupancy within half the time. This allowed for the company to open their doors much sooner, generating revenue considerably faster.

Technical Innovation : Custom rooms were built to accommodate the sensory researchers and panelists. Isolated panelist booths were specially designed to disrupt the senses of the panelists including distraction from taste, aroma, and appearance. Controlled lighting was installed to interrupt color perception and signal systems were used to communicate with the panelists. A serving hallway was used to pass through wine, pallet cleansers, and other items that would help with descriptive tasting. A one-way mirror was installed in the observation room to allow audio/video monitoring. A kitchen was installed for preparation purposes and included a large walk-in refrigerator with data recorders.
Constellation Brands needed a temporary solution to their facility needs while they wait for their new facility set to be built in 2026. Modular construction was the perfect, sustainable choice as the company can disassemble, relocate, and reuse the building after their new facility is built.
