Architectural Excellence : Convenience store layouts and features are critical to retailers and everything from pump visibility and customer flow to product presentation and accessibility, impacts the store’s success. A functional interior layout created with a central island pay point offers unobstructed views of the canopy gas service and rear card lock pumps outside, as well as customers and products inside. The Country Style Deli food offering with a large prep area and drive thru window provides excellent operational efficiency for quick service. Dark and neutral colors give the store distinction by creating a warm home-like feeling. Finishes inside include varying ceramic designs, painted drywall and suspended ceilings with island bulkhead. Exterior has a unique canopy to brand the new store that allows the operator to place café tables under it during the summer. The finish has stone around the lower perimeter for durability, architectural aluminum panels above, and full glazing for daylight and view.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This building was 90 percent completed prior to leaving the NRB facility so on site time and activity was minimized. This store was designed as a pilot project, with plans to go into multiple locations in the Ottawa area within the next few years, so it was important to design a practical layout that would suit the various sites, meeting multiple municipal requirements that would result in very few changes. This store became the template for the program roll out, so any learning curves were taken care of and future stores, costs, schedules and quality expectations would be absolutely predictable for both owner operated stores, or franchises. Time to market is a key motivator to choosing to build off site in the retail environment, and NRB cut the construction time down significantly so the owner was earning revenue months sooner.

Technical Innovation : The 66' length of this large store required that one module be placed perpendicular to the main retail area modules, so the store was designed to contain the Country Style Deli features and services contained completely within that module. Recycled steel framing with 3" reinforced poured concrete floors were done at the plant, and ceramics were completely installed up to the module splits for finishing on site so no seams were apparent. Gas fired roof top units with economizers were used, along with water saving toilets and faucets with sensors for resource conservation. NRB places all drywall up on a ¾" inch recycled plastic strip so that in the event there is water present from spills or melting snow, the moisture does not wick up the walls causing deterioration or eventual mold contamination.
