Architectural Excellence : Winthrop Elementary's rapid Kindergarten program growth has generated the need for classroom space expansion. The school wanted to build a new learning space addition that would not isolate students from the rest of the school. The solution was to connect this 3,024 sq. ft. modular addition to the existing school through a conditioned corridor. The corridor provides students with a seamless transition between their new modern learning space and the existing school building. Classrooms, restrooms, and storage areas are all part of the new addition. The building's exterior, multi-toned hardi-panel with reglets, was specifically designed to complement the existing building and blend in with the campus surroundings.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : For the school, timing was the most cost-effective aspect of the classroom addition project. Delivery of the 85% complete building greatly reduced the amount of work that needed to be performed on site. The compressed schedule of 40 days on-site also reduced the length of site-supervision required; making off-site construction the most cost-effective solution for this project.

Technical Innovation : Tasteful landscaping was put in, not only to enhance the school facility, but it was also engineered to effectively divert water runoff away from the new classroom building.

A densely populated residential area surrounds Winthrop Elementary with narrow one-way streets and on-street parking. Off-site modular construction provided a way for new construction, without all the construction traffic and material deliveries.

One of the main requirements of the school was that the main entrance be on grade. The use of a concrete stem-wall foundation with interior piers allowed for the building to be set for ADA access compliance without the use of ramps and decks.
