Architectural Excellence : Western North Dakota is facing a significant population increase due to its booming oil region. This is causing an influx in student enrollment and a need for additional classroom space in the surrounding schools. To quickly and comfortably accommodate the increase at Williston School District, M SPACE provided 34,000 square feet of modular classroom and restroom space to both the McVay Elementary School and the Williston High School campus. In just over a month, the McVay site received 27 units and the high school received eight units to quickly and efficiently accommodate increased enrollment. Carpet squares were used throughout classrooms and the corridor for comfort and aesthetics. Each classroom was equipped with tack boards and smart boards offering advanced learning stations for students.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Modular construction proved the most cost effective method for the Williston School District because of its time saving benefits. The project was completed in roughly one month, providing much needed classroom space for the increase in students in the oil producing area. M SPACE was selected because our lease rates proved the most economically-feasible for the school district. The utilization of a translift eliminated the burden of a crane and provided further savings. The buildings were designed with relocatability and reusability in mind, should the buildings need to be repurposed or relocated in the future.

Technical Innovation : In order to place the units behind the existing elementary school campus, the playground had to be removed and relocated. M SPACE also removed 20,000 cubic yards of existing grade to make room for the units at both sites. After leveling the area, the units were set using a translift. The interior lighting system consists of high-efficiency T-8 tube fluorescent lights with occupancy sensor switches, whereas exterior lights are 13W fluorescent with photocell to avoid wasteful use. The windows feature low E coatings to suppress heat flow and the HVAC units are equipped with heat pumps and 7-day programmable thermostats to lower operational costs. The exterior walls between classrooms contain R-21 Kraft-Faced fiberglass insulation batts and interior walls are R-11 unfaced fiberglass insulated to control the transfer of noise and limit disruptions to the learning environment. Additionally, carpet squares containing recycled materials are used throughout the classrooms and corridors.
