Architectural Excellence : The Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District has experienced rapid growth and required an expedient solution to add high quality classroom space during renovation and construction throughout the District. After a large school bond was passed a fast track schedule was required to accommodate 1200 students for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year. The project consisted of five separate modular classroom buildings with (45) classrooms all connected to the existing Wiley Middle School. The connecting corridor was provided in a campus design that provided a temperature controlled environment as students moved between the classrooms. The design team carefully considered the requirements of the teaching space providing standard classrooms as well as expanded space for Biology, Chemistry, Computer, Home Economics, Business, and Criminal Justice lecture with laboratory classrooms.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building modules were designed and manufactured to exceed current energy codes that included 2”x6” exterior wall studs with R-24 insulation as well as R-38 roof and R-24 floor insulation. The exterior doors were inset to provide a vestibule that protected the corridors from the exterior environment. All exterior egress from the modular corridors have been provided with aluminum ADA compliant ramps that will be relocated with the modular classroom buildings. The (5) modular complexes are efficiently designed with a central 10’ wide corridor with lockers on both sides to provide storage for all students in this area. This eliminates the need for time spent traveling to the existing Wiley Middle School before and after classes. The corridors, reception area, offices, and restrooms provide modular classroom space that is independent of the existing school.

Technical Innovation : The project site provided limited space to accommodate the required modular square footage and corridors to Wiley Middle School. The modular space was configured in separate buildings with connecting corridors to custom fit the available site space which provided an oval drive around the school. This provided an efficient path for bus, staff, and parent traffic. All crawl spaces were insulated and conditioned to protect the underfloor plumbing from freezing which provided an upgrade and a more reliable system over heat tape. The crawl space heat was ducted directly under the floor and vented to the outside to avoid any return air from below to the classroom space. A Criminal Defense room was provided with an enlarged padded floor area for self-defense demonstrations and student practice. The Home Economics room is fully equipped with (6) kitchen work areas and the Chemistry and Biology areas have specialty counters and lab equipment.
