Architectural Excellence : For the 2018-19 school year, the Webster Groves School District required a modular classroom to accommodate an expanding enrollment within the district. The client desired to add as much classroom space as their elementary school campus footprint could accommodate. We initially consulted with the district and, with the client’s input, proposed a plan for a 28' x 76' box size modular classroom with a connecting hallway which matched the current campus’ aesthetics. Each classroom comfortably accommodates 25+ full-time students and a teacher. Both the Webster Groves School District and the community are very satisfied with our solution. The exterior finishes and features are a blend of the current site and the neighborhood environment. The project was implemented with the least amount of disruption to the community.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Webster Groves School District’s primary concerns for this project were budget, construction timeline, and the flexibility of the classroom space. These concerns played into the final decision in determining conventional vs. modular construction. Because we could engineer, prepare the site and construct virtually simultaneously, it was an easy decision to choose modular construction. Our timeline was less than 120 days from start to finish for the project. Since we could provide the same exterior look as masonry at substantial savings, it became obvious that modular was the correct decision. The flexibility of a modular building for future use at another district location tipped the scale when selecting modular construction over conventional. All in all, this project was a win-win for the district and our industry.

Technical Innovation : The district required that the classroom match the existing 40-year-old building's exterior finish. They also wanted the classroom to blend with the surrounding neighborhood to alleviate a concern regarding the stigma of having a "trailer" in the community. We provided the solution by partnering with a local fabricator who developed "faux" masonry siding that matched the existing exterior. Manufactured in 4'x8' sections, the product has locking joints and finished edge and trim pieces. The building was manufactured without siding, and we were able to install the matching siding on-site with relative ease.
In addition, a shingled, 4/12 hip roof was required to match the other buildings on-site. Our manufacturer engineered a building that not only accommodated the request but was still transportable given the DOT’s maximum height constraints. After logistics were set in place, the building arrived and was ready for installation onto footers that were pre-poured during site preparations.
