Award Winner : Modtech

Architectural Excellence : The project utilizes modular construction to construct a complete school campus which is indistinguishable from site built construction. The two story design allows for more open space surrounding the buildings. The project includes 26 classrooms, a multipurpose room, a library/media center, lunch shelters, an elevator, a warming kitchen and administrative offices. All buildings include upgrades such as exterior cement plaster with aluminum reveals, custom baked enamel aluminum windows, clerestory recessed windows, standing seam metal roofing and poured in place concrete foundations. The C-shape configuration of the classroom section creates an attractive courtyard as well as providing visibility to circulation corridors from the main buildings thereby increasing security. Walls facing play areas feature smaller windows reducing noise transfer into classrooms offering fewer distractions.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The perimeter classroom windows are recessed to allow daylight to penetrate the interior spaces while avoiding direct sunlight and heat to assist in the reduction of cooling costs. The grouping of the classrooms coupled with the two story design reduces the overall surface area of building that offers a reduction in HVAC loads, building installation time and an overall reduction of construction costs. Each classroom offer the same design features that decreased the factory production and delivery time and production costs.

Technical Innovation : The design of the campus was replicated on another district site to construct an identical campus thereby reducing professional design fees. The classroom buildings include a 4:12 standing metal roofing with light gauge steel trusses and parapet walls at low slope roofing that provided visual control of the roof mounted HVAC units. The multi-purpose building was constructed site constructed using prefabricated modular roof sections, a structural steel super structure and metal wall framing in conjunction with slab on grade foundation.
