Architectural Excellence : Our Voyageur South Lodge is a 624-person facility providing workforce housing for an energy company located approximately 30 km NW of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The lodge includes hotel style check-in lobby, conference rooms, work boot and coat storage, lounge areas, first aid facilities, games room, theatre, separate cardio and weight rooms, public washrooms, commissary, commercial kitchen with two buffet style serving lines and one custom order line, open dining area and outdoor patios. The suites consist of an executive desk, wardrobe closet, double-sized bed, flat screen television, private washroom, extensive soundproofing and independent room controls for heating and air conditioning. Interior furnishings, such as the laminate flooring in the lunch areas and leather desk chairs, were chosen for durability and to provide a comfortable, relaxing environment.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Mid-way through the site installation, the owner requested to increase the lodge occupancy from 576 to 624, and to complete the work concurrently. The full suite of services on the project were completed in house, including design, manufacturing, transportation and installation, allowing for a quick response and successful completion, even working through the harsh Northern Canadian winter which would have impeded site-built construction. The modular design and construction of the site utilities allowed for simple, cost effective upgrades to meet the increased demand.

Technical Innovation : The lodge was custom designed to fit on an undeveloped site with restrictive dimensions. It is completely stand alone and self contained for all utilities and infrastructure, including potable water, fire water, sewage collection, power generating plants, LP gas storage and vehicle parking. The modular building structures include structurally engineered floor beams to reduce both the quantity and duration for foundation screw piles. Architectural LED fixtures in the suites and compact fluorescent lights in common areas were used to improve energy efficiency, in combination with hot water recirculating systems, low-flow water fixtures and selection of energy efficient appliances.
