University of Cincinnati Wilson Auditorium - Swing Space
Additional Info
Award Winner : United Rentals - Storage & Office Solutions
Architectural Excellence : Perched atop a hillside that blends into the existing campus, the modular building site is a small footprint between existing structures. The building is being used as swing space for the University of Cincinnati. Substantial excavation to the site included: dirt removal, retaining walls, extensive footings, storm drainage and site utility installation. Once the site work was complete, 30 modules were configured and crane set into place.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The University of Cincinnati was able to purchase the used modular facilities from a local public school district for a fraction of original cost.
By reusing an existing set of buildings, the client was able to have their entire swing space plan completed prior to the start of the fall trimester. Without obtaining the used structures, the university would have had to purchase new buildings, which would have cost considerably more and would not have met their completion deadline.
With the swing space in place in such a quick span of time, the University was able to move onto the next phase of a large expansion/renovation project.

Technical Innovation : In addition to adding more modules to the originally designed and built complex, technical innovations for this project included interior layout changes to the two buildings.
Classroom sizes at the University of Cincinnati are considerably larger than the original classroom areas of the modular building. Pac-Van worked with Mark Line Industries' engineering staff in order to achieve larger classroom sizes. By removing load bearing walls and creatively installing lvl beams which were supported on steel posts within the roof cavity, Pac-Van was able to effectively create clear span modules. This design change allowed us to double the size of each classroom.
