Architectural Excellence : This building is 112x60 mixed use building is used for counseling & rehabilitation of troubled youths housed at an adjacent secure dormitory. It is designed with three 24x30 classrooms on one end with a 1-hour fire rated hallway separating the counseling center from the classrooms. The counseling center has 19 offices, a break room, and a large work area in the middle. There are 4 restrooms in the building, 2 opening into the hallway that are accessible from the classrooms, and 2 opening into the counseling center. Interior finishes included: walls-vinyl covered gypsum, doors-pre-finished solid natural wood, floor- tile & 26 oz Olefin carpet, windows- double insulated, ceiling- pre-finished gypsum. Exterior finishes: Hardi-panel siding, trim & false mansard, steel doors, 45 mil EPDM roof w/densdeck. Additionally, the site’s slope was challenging, requiring 6’ high footers & piers on one side.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : All insulation was specified to code to meet the region’s efficiency requirements. Wall hung HVAC units with plenum walls and fire dampers provide safe and efficient heating and cooling. Installation of concrete footers and CMU piers allows for easy relocation, expansion and/or reconfiguration in the future.

Technical Innovation : Security and safety can be an issue at times during tough counseling sessions. Each of the counseling offices has an unbreakable Lexan window. Occupants can be viewed by a counselor supervisor and violent behavior can be contained. One counseling room employs a two-way mirror for observation. Layout required some headers to be installed on site. An icemaker ensures plenty of cold drinks are available when sessions get heated
