Architectural Excellence : Peerless Trout First Nation is a newly recognized Aboriginal community in Northern Alberta and was in need of a fire hall. This facility utilizes a combination of modular units for the administrative section and a pre-engineered steel building for the vehicle bays. The administrative section provides direct access to the vehicle bays and consists of an office, exercise room, kitchen, laundry room, men’s and women’s change rooms as well as mechanical and storage areas. The exterior of both the modular and pre-engineered sections were designed and finished to match, which provides the appearance of one unified structure.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The remote location of the community and short building season provided an excellent opportunity to utilize off-site construction in order to complete the project in a timely and effective manner.

Technical Innovation : In this remote Northern community, thawing of the ground starts in mid-June. The site construction started in early spring and utilized ground thawing equipment to prepare for foundation works. Site challenges included reduced road width for transportation into the community, bridges and the requirement of new infrastructure at the site. The modules were craned into place prior to the construction of the pre-engineered building and properly flashed to provide a seamless connection of the buildings.

The roof system utilized an EPDM roof system and required additional structural integrity where the modular units connect to the pre-engineered building because of the snow load caused by drifting.
