Additional Info

Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions

Architectural Excellence : A small and outdated school built in the early 1920's was demolishedto make room for a new 100,000 sq ft combination elementary and magnet school, consisting of approximately 40,000 sqaure feet of site built structure housing the cafetorium, kitchen, gym, and mechincal rooms with approxiamtely 60,000 square feet of modular classrooms and offices, all sitting over a site built, below grade parking garage. Situated on a V-shaped lot, in the middle of a residential community, the new school now occupies the entire block. The exterior was finished in a brick that gives the appearance of a 1950's building to match with the surrounding brick homes. At the main entry to the elementary school on the first floor, stands a two-story atrium which incorporates four gargoyles saved from the old building facade. Interior features include a "green" roof in the central core area for growing of plants, ceramic tiles walls and floors in bathrooms, and a core area with arched metal panel ceilings.

Technical Innovation : Consisting of 88 modules and 66 panelized units, this modular building offered challenges on several fronts. First, the main support of the modular building was through a spider-web of steel in the "roof" of the below grade, site built parking garage. Second, stair towers built on site, prior to arrival of the modular units, dictated elevations between floors while site built walls for the gym and cafeteria set boundries for modular layout and fit. When the modules were all set and delivered, floor to floor elevations were within a quarter inch of the site built stairs and layout and fit was within one-half inch (under) to site built walls. One portion of the modular building had to cantilever into the two-story main entry atrium to create a balcony view area.
