The City of Calgary Waste & Recycling Office
Additional Info

Architectural Excellence : This office centre was designed with a focus on bringing in as much natural light as possible. Frosted clear story windows in the locker room allow lots of natural light, while a skylight in the desk raises eye level to make the room seem larger. Large exterior windows (72” x 36”) were installed around the entire office.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Energy efficiency was a primary factor when designing these custom units. High efficiency 25W T8 lighting was installed for all lighting fixtures. All of the common areas (locker rooms, washrooms, office space and training rooms) were equipped with motion sensing ceiling mounted devises. Water conservation was also considered through out the design process. Dual flush lavatories were installed along with sensor operated urinals. Employees of this recycling plant were also encouraged to choose more environmentally friendly methods of getting to work, so an enclosed bike storage area was incorporated into the final product.

Technical Innovation : In the initial design phase of this office, special needs were identified. While the centre’s primary purpose is an office space, the facility was also to provide a dining and lounge area for employees. As well, a bright, spacious locker room was built to provide an area for employees to change and safely store their personal belongings during their shift. In order to enhance the productivity of the workspace, two sound dampening partitions were installed to divide the dining area and offices.
