Architectural Excellence : The Building consists of six modules orientated in a side by side and offset configuration. The building has two uses: one as remote operations building and the other as a full service geological laboratory. The design of the building required the laboratory to be separated from the main office area, yet still connected to the office. By keeping the mudroom in a central location, the flow of the building allows for the traffic to the lab and the offices to be isolated from each other. The laboratory was custom designed for our client and their specific needs on their project as this was a geological dewatering area that required special tests to be completed right at site. The laboratory included specialized lab equipment including enclosed fume hoods and stainless steel throughout. Elevated T-bar ceilings were used throughout, allowing for the complex to feel as a complete building even due to the particularity of the building modules layout.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Due to the remoteness and limited access, modular construction was the only feasible and economical way to execute the project. By installing the specialized lab equipment in plant, it prevented the client from having to deliver and install via helicopter.

Technical Innovation : Due to the unique and remote location of the building, security features had to be designed into the building to provide protection against intruders from entering the building as the building is unoccupied for extended periods of time. This was an extremely time sensitive project as this area was accessed only by an ice road. The installation was time was compressed significantly due to the weather conditions warming up. BCT successfully completed the installation turnover was completed in less than 5 days. The remote northern location this building made it susceptible to weather changes and changes to the ground conditions. As such, when installation occurred, the prepared site had a slope of more than 24 inches or 4% on site which in turn made conditions difficult. The ground consisted of muskeg therefore frost heaves were common even after ground compaction. The building was placed on rig matting and crib blocking material to allow for these ground shifts.
