Sunday Creek Lodge Expansion
Additional Info
Award Winner : Black Diamond Group
Architectural Excellence : Originally opened in December 2009 to house workers in some of the world’s harshest working environments, this remote workforce housing facility required rapid expansion to tackle a sharp increase in workforce numbers at Northern Alberta’s booming oil sands projects. Modular construction allowed this facility to increase from 1044 to 1182 beds in 75 days without disrupting guest services to current lodge occupants. The complete expansion added a second storey to a majority of the existing sleeping quarters plus a seamless addition to the existing recreation and kitchen facilities. The new modules added 71,000 sq. feet.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Modular construction allowed the second-storey expansion to progress at an accelerated pace while remaining under budget. The current operations of the facility were not affected during the expansion, and the facility was able to operate at capacity with full revenue generation continuing throughout the duration of the expansion project.

Technical Innovation : The extremely tight project timeline for this facility expansion required intricate scheduling of offsite module construction, transportation and installation. In addition, the project was built to a higher standard building code, moving the facility from a Part 10 Standard to a Part 3 Standard and allowing for the option of future expansion. Massive site improvements were made: the sewage treatment plant was completely upgraded, a fully-supported water well was constructed, the site was transitioned to full high-line power, fully-functional fire suppression was added, and the parking lot was significantly expanded.
