Award Winner : Art's-Way Scientific, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : Art’s Way Scientific was chosen to design, manufacture and install two show pig facilities to support farrowing and the nursing of piglets. Each module is 16’ x 88’ and includes a preheat room and animal room. The farrowing unit includes 26 farrowing crates with stainless steel divider panels that allow for maximum creep space and the nursery unit includes 10 stainless steel pens holding a total of 500 piglets. Cast iron slatted hog flooring supported over a sealed pit with scraper system allows sanitary waste management and removal. Structural insulated panels provide a sealed envelope, with sound attenuation properties, finished with steel siding to match existing campus structures. The Interior surfaces are finished with an anti-bacterial, seamless, fiberglass reinforced epoxy coating system. Insulated doors and windows are used to monitor animal activity and the environment.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : By utilizing the modular solution our client achieves three of their primary goals. The primary goal of the client was a mobile swine unit. It is likely that show pigs won’t always be a part of this farm. A standard site-built facility does not have the ability to be re-purposed or moved while the modular solution offers a better quality with a high resale value for when that time comes.
The second objective achieved was having the facility operational within a short time frame. With current regulations, the permitting process of just one portion of a site-built facility could take in excess of 7 months while the self-contained modular took out any need for this type of permitting and was operational within 8 weeks.
The third objective was to take advantage of accelerated depreciation offered on farm equipment rather than treating these as a structure. The modular solution made this project a simple and cost effective transaction.

Technical Innovation : Art’s Way Scientific implemented a new and innovative farrowing crate to use within the farrowing unit. Art’s Way Scientific’s team had been working to design a crate that enhanced the user experience in caring for the pigs, providing better comfort for the pigs as well as creating a design that was ideal for a modular structure. This space saving design allows up to 10 more crates in a modular unit in a farrowing unit in comparison to a “traditional “crate. Previous attempts at a similar design required a significant amount of time for assembly and installation. This cutting-edge design provides a crate with a minimal assembly and installation time that results in requiring a fraction of the labor hours for this process. This new design results in a huge win-win for both the end users and modular manufacturing.
