Additional Info

Award Winner : Triumph Modular

Architectural Excellence : The Steamship Authority engaged Triumph Modular for a temporary modular terminal building in Woods Hole, MA to be used during a six-year reconstruction project at its Woods Hole facility, which provides ferry transportation between Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard for over 2 million passengers a year.

The 3,600 square-foot facility, consisting of five modular units, required a complex design to house terminal functions including a customer waiting room, ticket operations, concessions, public and private restrooms, a kitchenette, and operations spaces.

The exterior walls are comprised of omni composite fiberglass panels covered by a large-scale custom vinyl wrap featuring nautical charts of Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard. Other elements include an office with a tempered glass ticket window, front custom bamboo and cedar decking, plywood cabinetry, a deep laminate backsplash at the ticket counter, and tile and epoxy floors.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The project achieved design to occupancy in just seven months, completing the project months before the contract end date. Utilizing factory construction helped achieve this fast time table which included factory installed siding, a pre-manufactured easy-to-install canopy, pre-assembled deal trays, and pre-cut glass. All pieces were carefully laid out in the factory, and required careful coordination to ensure proper installation on-site.

Technical Innovation : The location and function of the building dictated important design decisions. A storage room had to be structurally engineered to house three safes totaling 1850 lbs. due to the high volume of sales performed in the building, while the building’s proximity to the harbor required windows to be impact resistant. Tempered glass was installed onsite with a pre-cut hole to accommodate custom brushed stainless steel deal trays. Interior and exterior walls were taped, spackled, and primed by the factory, Whitley Manufacturing, while all final painting and touch-ups were performed on site. Bamboo was selected as the material for the composite decking for its aesthetics and sustainability.
