Architectural Excellence : As part of Starbucks’ environmentally-friendly pilot program, the design concept for this 386 sq ft drive thru/walk up coffee shop location is the brainchild of Starbucks’ Arthur Rubinfeld, president of global development and architect by trade. This reduced-footprint Starbucks is one of 5 locations manufactured by Walden Structures. Featuring 2 service windows that accommodate separate drive-thru and walk-up orders, an ADA-compliant employee restroom, and enough interior prep and service space to serve up their customers, the modular concept was a perfect fit for this high-traffic, limited space South Salt Lake City site. By modifying 2 multi-use cargo containers into 24-foot, 16-foot, and 8-foot sections, the creation of highly functional workspaces was achieved – even the cargo doors were repurposed to create canopy-like shading for the walkway leading to the storage shed. In keeping with Starbucks’ green initiative, the exterior siding was made out of reclaimed local snow fence.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : By modifying the same style of cargo containers used to ship their coffee around the world, Starbucks is able to benefit not only from the future relocatability potential of these buildings, but also play a large role in reducing unnecessary landfill waste. To assist with future operating costs, a soy-based spray foam insulation known for its higher R-values was selected for use in the floor, wall, and ceiling cavities. In addition, the installation of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, cabinetry, and all appliances and equipment was completed here in the factory to reduce associated schedule delays and additional costs. The buildings were also pre-wired to accommodate the site illumination of Starbucks branding signage and menu boards.

Technical Innovation : This LEED-silver certified building was manufactured by modifying two cargo containers to achieve the desired Starbucks layout. A third, roof-top mounted 8-foot container section with custom-designed decorative screens was utilized to conceal the Mitsubishi dual heating/cooling HVAC mechanical system with combined ERV. In order to mitigate any unforeseen site scheduling delays, all back-flow preventers and in-line double-check valves for the coffee equipment were installed and integrated here at the plant. Given the limited availability of interior space, a pocket restroom door was utilized to achieve ADA clearance requirements.
