Stackt Public Washroom
Additional Info
Award Winner : Corner Cast Construction Inc.
Architectural Excellence : Situated in downtown Toronto on undeveloped land, this project was created to serve as a temporary community marketplace. The modified container creates a functional and aesthetically appeasing installation which blends into the unique repurposed landscape, while its durability and re-locatability allows for future moves to other vacant lots to bring new life to barren lots waiting for development. These public washrooms were designed to allow easy access for large number of people as well as public wheelchair access. This single wide unit was extended by welding a 40’ HC container with 10’ re-purposed containers together to get the space that the mechanical room, including water pump, water heater and HVAC unit required.
The compact interior design creates an efficient use of space, with durable and washable interior materials ideal for public use and easy maintenance, while the rich and relevant colorful exterior façade is juxtaposed into the downtown Toronto landscape.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : In the densely populated area of down town Toronto the use of prefabricated units reduced both the high cost of on site work as well as the time loss due to traffic. The re-locatability and durability, in combination with the efficient design energy star rated equipment and airtightness of the containers reduce energy consumption, made the re-purposed shipping containers the most economical solution and key to the success of the project.

Green Building Description : The used shipping container as base module was recycled and given a second life as a public washroom. The minimum environmental impact due to prefabrication allowed installation in 1 day resulted in less waste on site and with highly efficient insulation with R-28 for wall and R-30 for roof, the building requires less energy consumption during its life time. As the containers have their own supporting structure, no concrete base was needed resulting in zero footprint when the project is complete, and allowing the unit to be relocated easily with no demolition or waste associated.

Technical Innovation : With the installation taking place in down town Toronto under the shadow of the CN tower, the units needed to be fully prepared within the factory to reduce the site work and logistical challenges. The combination of technical space and public space together in one unit with limited space created challenges for the technical distribution and fire rated compartments. Both were delt with by welding a 40’ and 10’ container together; The mechanical space was placed in the 10ft container. With the mechanical room having its own steel compartment a fire separation was created from the public space. A linear integral technical shaft through the 40ft HC container allowed for electrical wiring, HVAC conducts, plumbing lines.
