Award Winner : M Space Holdings LLC

Architectural Excellence : St. Petersburg College needed to expand its campus to accommodate its growing student population in time for the upcoming fall semester. They chose a modular solution due to the speed at which buildings are constructed. M Space provided 11 modules which included faculty offices, three spacious classrooms, restrooms, a physics lab and an interior electrical and low voltage panel room.

All rooms feature 2 x 2 carpet squares and interior walls were site-finished with a seamless texture. Sound deadening insulation was installed in the walls and ceiling of the faculty building to reduce sound transmission from one office to the next and from the corridor into each office space. The modules were set on an asphalt parking lot within the existing campus and feature aluminum entry access and walkways. Similar paint colors were chosen to complement the existing campus facilities. Although the buildings are temporary, the client expects to use them for many years.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : St. Petersburg College chose modular construction because of the speed advantage over traditional construction. Modular construction proved the most cost effective solution and the only method that would allow the buildings to be ready for occupancy in time for the 2011 school year. Upon receiving the award, M Space designed, delivered and installed the modules in just three months. This allowed the client to comfortably accommodate new and existing students and avoid overcrowded classrooms.

M Space scheduled all construction in the summer, eliminating site disruption to educators and students. The buildings were designed to meet Florida Energy Code utilizing durable windows, thick insulation in floors, walls and roof and proper HVAC equipment. Each classroom has the ability to control its own temperature and can be programmed to run only when students are present. This not only conserves energy but lowers operating costs and saves the client money.

Technical Innovation : The client not only required a quick delivery time in the middle of a busy summer but the buildings also called for high-end specifications. M Space used textured and painted drywall instead of the standard vinyl covered gypsum and Grade 1 door hardware for its durability. The buildings include commercial steel galvanized exterior doors and jambs, a hot gas reheat wall and wall mounted air conditioning units with humidity control and programmable thermostats. Thick insulation was installed in floors (R-19), walls (R-13) and roof (R-30) for maximum energy efficiency and improved comfort. The physics lab features a smart board and added cabinetry for storage space. Electrical and data receptacles were installed on floors for a convenient power source for student and teacher workstations. The buildings are designed to withstand high winds and feature hurricane impact windows for added protection against the devastating effects of high winds and debris.
