Architectural Excellence : Design build with client’s architect. Addition to existing campus that had outgrown its multipurpose building. Vision was to create a building that could be used as the Sanctuary and Administrative offices until a future Sanctuary is built. Deadline was Good Friday Services with construction starting in August and occupancy 2 weeks early.

Features include: 20’ interior ceiling height; fully controllable lighting and sound system, acoustical ceiling treatments, seating for 600, kitchen/sacristy, reception, and clerestory windows in the Sanctuary that allow hints of light. Multi colored cornices draw eye to the full 26’ height of the building exterior. Entry steel trellis shading identifies the entrance and brings the building to human scale.

More than 80 mature trees were salvaged, shaped, and replanted. Overgrown desert wash was cleared, creating a park like setting retaining the serene lush desert ambiance.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Exterior walls are steel with 6” wall studs with 1” foam gaining R-value. The exterior uses 1” insulation board for a net R-value of 25 for the wall system. Roof systems employ R30+ batt insulation & rigid reflective foam insulation for increased R-value & sound control. Electrical designs are 3 phase power for minimum energy use. The package includes 1” SOLEX dual glazing, tinted windows. Close tolerances minimize air infiltration into buildings. High SEER mechanical units reduce energy costs. Entrance trellis and clerestory windows reduce direct desert sun.

General contractor for infrastructure & site improvements, including utility & permit coordination, and architect of record while collaborating with owner & architect on design.

On site only 5 months.

Technical Innovation : This permanent high public use religious building features steel superstructure and framing, slab-on-grade foundation, EIFS, changes in rooflines and ceiling heights. The steel construction provides added strength & durability for many years of commercial high public use. Clerestory windows & entry trellis diffuse direct light (and heat) in the desert. Telescoping system creates large open interior to 20’ while maintaining ease of shipping. Parapets hide mechanic units on roof top.

Fully controllable lighting and sound system and zoned HVAC aide in energy management.
