Architectural Excellence : This workforce camp provided an innovative solution to an accommodation need, which resulted from a natural disaster. In designing the site, the team had unique challenges to take into consideration. With the requirement to provide almost 1500 beds, the team only had access to 20 acres of land in an industrial area and had to work around a drainage ditch that encompassed a central portion of the site. As a result, the layout features 2 parallel strips of dorms with parking access on the exterior perimeter. Each dorm unit includes a shared or private bathroom, with a personal TV, WIFI and AC in each room. The camp includes two recreation facilities with a gym and entertainment room, as well as a large kitchen and dining facility. The camp was installed in a continuous manner; Workers began occupying the dorms as soon as each block of 3 units were installed. This enabled remediation efforts in Paradise to get underway without delay, since there was accommodation available for the crews.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : As part of a larger disaster-recovery effort, Black Diamond Group was one of several companies involved in this project and worked closely with Odin Construction Solutions. Among other responsibilities, Odin executed the civil work on site, which allowed Black Diamond to seamlessly deliver and install the assets continuously as they arrived to site from Northern Alberta. A translift was used to move and place the units on blocking, which were then secured using seismic anchoring. This method was efficient and is also much safer than other potential installation methods. The site was designed in a capacity that allowed portions of the camp to be operational and decommissioned in response to demand for accommodation, providing a cost-savings to the client. All assets can be relocated and repurposed for future project needs.

Technical Innovation : In November 2018, a devastating wildfire ravaged through Northern California and destroyed the town of Paradise. Thousands of people were displaced from their homes and took up temporary residence in the hotels between Oroville and Sacramento. When remediation began the following year, through its contract with Odin Construction Solutions, Black Diamond Group rapidly deployed and mobilized a workforce camp to accommodate crews involved in the cleanup effort close to the project site. Underutilized assets from the Western Canadian market were transported across provincial, international and state borders as an innovative solution to an imminent need. The use of existing assets minimized timelines and enabled the lodge to be rapidly installed and operational. The contract initially only included dormitories, but kitchen facilities and recreation amenities were added to the scope of work in order to provide a self-sufficient and self-contained camp facility.
