Spruce Meadows Washroom Complex
Additional Info
Award Winner : ATCO Structures & Logistics Ltd.
Architectural Excellence : For the new Founders Plaza at Spruce Meadows, one of the most notable venues in the world for equestrian events, ATCO Structures & Logistics provided a four-unit, 59’ x 64’ permanent bathroom complex with steel framing and concrete slab flooring. To give the building an enduring look and feel that blends in perfectly with the rest of the traditional environment and buildings, a site-built gable roofing system and stucco exterior with painted exposed beams were used. Inside the facility, off-white and neutral tiled floors and walls give the interior a fresh and clean look. Other features include a stereo music system with ceiling-mount speakers, baby changing stations, as well as special needs bathroom stalls, to accommodate event attendees.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The unique concrete floor modules helped expedite the install schedule due to the reduced site work required.
By using waterless urinals, our client was able to save on water and related expenses. The automatic lighting system ensured that energy was used most efficiently. To ensure durability of the building, which reduces the need for maintenance and repairs, steel frames were used instead of wood. The complex was built in partnership with CANA Construction, leveraging their strength in site components and utilities.
In addition to building the complex with energy efficient resources, many mature trees were salvaged in the placement and construction process.

Green Building Description : While the client did not request any green features, the project ensured that many mature trees were salvaged during placement and construction. In addition, because the modules were all built indoors, no temporary heat was necessary during construction on site.

Technical Innovation : For the construction of the modules, the steel-framed units were built in a manufacturing facility that is usually used for wood-framed structures. The modules were built on concrete slabs at our factory and then shipped to site as a complete building instead of pouring the slabs on site (in winter) and craning the modules into place. Tiled floors and walls were completed prior to the transportation of the complex, so there was no lost time after delivery, which enabled a two-month turnover. To match the look of the entrance corridor, seamless epoxy floor was used for the units. The washroom facility featured waterless urinals, automatic flushing toilets, automatic light timer systems and motion detectors, all designed to conserve water and energy.
