Architectural Excellence : The Alternative Education Program at Spring Lake Public Schools had been housed in 25-year-old modular buildings located in the bus garage parking lot. The district wanted an upgraded facility that would provide the students with an educational environment that would be equal to what the rest of the students receive in the district. IMS constructed a four-classroom building with offices and restrooms. The building sits surrounded by a pond on three sides and is within a short walk of the main high school campus. Utilizing the existing property was of utmost importance to the district because they wanted the alternative students to have access to activities at the main campus. The building sits on a on a permanent block foundation with a crawl space and features a high pitched roof and a vinyl siding exterior with a 4’ architectural block facade. The interior features 8 1/2’ suspended ceilings, VCG walls, and carpet tiles in the classrooms.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building was completed on an accelerated timeline, incorporating the aesthetics and curb appeal of a high-pitched roof. Shaw carpet tiles were used as floor covering in the classrooms and administrative areas to reduce installation costs and maintenance. VCT was used in the corridor which included a 15’ walk-off tile at both entrances. Bard gas wall-mounted HVAC units with CRV’s were used, and CO2 sensors were installed in the classrooms to provide fresh air and an improved learning environment.

The building also features recyclable carpet tiles, low energy electronic ballast with t-8 bulbs, room occupancy sensors and a hot water recirculation system for the restrooms. This project was completed in 62 days and came in under budget. Spring Lake’s modular facility upgrade for their alternative education program has had a positive impact on the students and was viewed as money well spent by the community.

Technical Innovation : This building features Whitley Manufacturing’s High-Profile Roof System. This patent-pending roof system gives the building an aesthetically pleasing, site-built look. The five-module building was set by a crane in one day and the roof system was installed the next day. The roof system did not necessitate any special shipping requirements and it was properly sealed to protect the building during storage as well as during transit. Within a week of installation, the roof had been shingled and the vinyl siding had been installed.
