Architectural Excellence : This 2018 start the biggest mining project at north of Chile, near to Sierra Gorda city; the project name in SGO SPENCE Mine Expansion; the project needs to begin a big Camp for workforce up to 7,000 workers. BHP Billiton is an Australian Mining company and is owner of SPENCE copper mine; the expansion project requires also dormitories and ancillary facilities, specially the dining hall facility for all the 7 thousand works, with app 45.000 sq. mt. of buildings.

The design of new buildings is based in use a one typical module, with two bedrooms up to 3 persons of capacity with a private bathroom, complexing in a 2-storey buildings. The units are built with structural wood; walls and diaphragms for flooring and ceiling, with thermal insulation and noising reduction elements between bedrooms, exceeds the requirements of Chilean construction codes.

All the dormitories are interconnected by outside walkways. All users, could walk outside between its room to the mess hall, or recreat

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The construction of the project includes more than 600 modular buildings new, saving a lot of time and money in preparation of interior finishing, and bathroom and appliances already installed in the factory.

But the use of another 450 units recycled from Escondida Project, is an extra saving cost for BHP Billiton because the transportation it is not a big cost to the project.

Green Building Description : Using lumber in a 2 storey building is a great step in sustainability, by itself.
No carbon footprint, or a big reduction in it, is a very good innovation for our country. Chile produce al big volume of radiata pine, wish is the base of all panels and diaphragms of the modules in the project.

Also, the thermal insulation, and the thickness of walls, allows to reduce the heating and cooling needs inside the rooms. It means, saving power in climate of the buildings.

The old camps modules, was disassemble from the actual location, and there is a BHP Billiton plan to recycling for second use as part of this SGO SPENCE Camp.

Technical Innovation : BIM technologies are applied to architectural design, and it allows very easy modifications and communications with engineering and site supervision. The all project schedule was improving by 30% using these design tools.

Finally, the use of intensive lumber in design, is a big number in CO2 reduction in buildings. Also, the thermal insulation allows the buildings to save a lot in heating and cooling, during winter or summer time. Air conditioning equipment have install inside inverter heat pump, which save electrical power too. The gas inside the machine is also an environmentally friendly gas R410.

The third part of camp is rental buildings. That means, at end of the project will be relocated in other place, including their foundations.

A very interesting point in SGO SPENCE project, it is to incorporation of recycling buildings that de BHP Billiton company owns at ESCONDIDA Mine, in Antofagasta. The buildings are basically dormitories and they don’t have today. The
