Award Winner : ModSpace

Architectural Excellence : Southern Ocean Medical Center needed additional space for a new MRI system. ModSpace’s healthcare division (MedBuild) designed an addition that housed the MRI system, as well as a waiting room, patient prep areas, work space and support space for the new system.

The facility had to be ready before the MRI system was delivered. MedBuild worked directly with MRI manufacturer to provide custom-built imaging suite to fit the specific machine.

The addition was to be built between two wings of the hospital, requiring a unique design that incorporated an open path from the building for a fire exit. The building was attached directly to the hospital through two existing doorways that provide direct access from the existing department into the new addition.

The new steel and concrete facility was finished and painted, including a thin-brick wainscot with an exterior insulation finishing system, to match the surrounding facility in both materials and color scheme.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The hospital was on a tight budget. Through MedBuild utilizing its in-house suite of imaging products, the company completed the facility in 208 days. Traditional construction would have added a few months onto the project timeline. As Southern Ocean Medical Center was occupying the space sooner, they were able to offer this additional service to their patients and start generating significant revenue.

As the facility was designed and built to maintain strict temperature and humidity standards, there are no fluctuating temperatures, which could consume costly energy.

Project Location City : Manahawkin

Project Location State Name : NJ

Technical Innovation : The imaging suite was built in five modular components in a Georgia facility. Once completed, the building components were transported to New Jersey and installed over the weekend, minimally disrupting any service to patients or other hospital operations. The natural speed of the modular construction process allowed MedBuild to have the building finished and ready for the MRI shipment by late April.

MedBuild’s internal engineering team designed a rooftop HVAC mechanical system to keep temperature and humidity ranges within a tight tolerance. A steel radio frequency shielding system was also installed to keep outside radio signals from interfering with the operation of the MRI system.
