Architectural Excellence : The architectural opportunity was to blend the nearby mountains and rustic ski lodge with an existing tilt-up concrete building that is tilt-faced with corrugated steel.
The school needed new classrooms and a multi-purpose area for their students plus space to support local,national and international events at this former Olympic cross country venue. The buildings individual size was constrained by site conditions. A single pitched corrugated roof and earthy colors mimic the mountain theme. The procession of three buildings along a long, narrow driveway softens the visitor’s view of the existing school. An impressive 70’x15’ composite deck allows for outdoor dining, expanded classroom space and event observation. The buildings interior features warm earth tones and large, ample windows to complement the school’s environmental and outdoor learning focus. Vaulted ceilings with clear story windows create openness and day lighting. Soundproof operable partitions enable multipurpose use.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The buildings exceed state energy code by 10%. This was accomplished in part through the lighting system as it’s designed for 4-levels of illumination and some occupancy sensors. With numerous Low-E windows the buildings can operate 100% with natural light plus provide air flow to save on HVAC usage. The roof, walls and floor have upgraded insulated R-value. The look and feel of permanence was desired. A single sloped roof attaches to an awning covered by solid length corrugated steel and a 70’x15’ composite deck created the permanence. However, the buildings are on CMU block and temporary. Many special subs and suppliers worked on this project. Wall carpet added a sound damping effect while saving site work finish costs. This will save repair costs of damage from student abuse and holes that are expected from display of class projects. To save time on site, the factory worked with fire and data installers. The majority of the buildings’ functionality was completed in the factory.

Technical Innovation : To maximize the vaulted ceilings and shipping height while providing a minimal amount of room for the mechanical and electrical above the 2x2 drop ceiling, a closed cell, spray-in urethane was used to insulate the roof. The header beam in the vaulted area was designed for acoustical partition panels with integrated white boards. The panels provide a sound buffer between classrooms while acting as the writing surface for the teacher. The panels open so the classrooms combine into a multi-purpose room.
Epoxy floors in the entry and restrooms were used for there durability and non-slip surface from snow and water tracked in from outside. Installation is a 5 stage process spanning over a weeks time. Other custom features not previously mentioned are: kitchenettes, drinking fountains and extra electrical capacity to support various events. The overall design and finishes required special coordination with the production line of the factory and the various contractors.
