Siegfried Elementary School
Additional Info
Award Winner : NRB Modular Solutions
Architectural Excellence : This school addition is a three-story facility with 5 classrooms per floor plus boys and girls gang-type bathrooms and storage rooms, and includes a large equipment penthouse also built at the factory, creating a 4th floor. The exterior is a face brick to match the existing school, while the interior is finished with drywall, taped, filled and painted, ceramic walls in bathrooms and ceramic and vinyl tile floors throughout. The building is comprised of 48 modules of varying sizes, put together both side by side, and end to end to precisely accommodate the schools layout needs. Pre-poured concrete floors completed at the plant replace the traditional slab on grade, providing the permanence and performance of conventional construction. Sprayed fireproofing was completed at the plant between floors, and touched up on site.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The HVAC system was designed with an automatic temperature control system, and all the light fixtures in classrooms and other spaces had energy saving ballasts with occupancy sensor lighting controls to help reduce energy consumption. All modules were fabricated with built in lifting eyes so they could be easily picked up from the trailers and set in place without slings and spreaders, saving much time and effort. NRB’s “build-together” method allowed for all piping and systems to be installed completely vertically and horizontally so testing could be done ahead of shipment, saving site testing steps. This building, with it’s steel and concrete design principles, meets the State of PA’s requirement for funding reimbursement because it is considered a permanent addition, yet the School District realized the significant construction time savings, that allowed them to use the facility months earlier, that they would not have received with conventional means – a win-win for them.

Technical Innovation : The building is non-combustible structural steel post and beam construction for optimal flexibility for any future renovations. We completed all but the exterior finishes at the factory, including millwork, ceramics, tack and marker boards, keeping the on-site time down to a minimum. The modular addition had to meet the existing school at three different elevations, presenting challenges because the varying levels in the existing building on their three floors had a 6” slope from one end to the other. This required an innovative solution – we created a pre-poured concrete ramp within our module so that the openings and floors levels between the two structures on all three levels were perfectly aligned. Large HVAC units were factory installed in our prefabricated penthouse, complete with all insulated piping – ready for hook up at the site. This prevented the local contractors from having to site install an enormous amount of HVAC equipment.
