Technical Innovation : Large volume classrooms were accomplished by the use of floor modules with roof modules set perpendicular to produce tall clerestory. Unique engineering incorporated temporary roof covering on the floor modules that were weather sealed but also easy and safe to remove after the roof units set. Floor to roof connections were concealed and became appealing interior architectural features. The desire to have the solid feel and quiet sound provided by concrete floors was achieved by designing heavy floor joists and floor decking topped with cement board underlayment and combined with strategically located foundation footings and support walls. A grade level entry eliminating ramps and stairs was achieved by using PT materials, membrane sheet sealer, and galvanized flashing to provide a well protected surface to backfill against. Installation time was shortened by supporting the canopy back to the building allowing quick and uninterrupted construction by the set crew and site contractor.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The buildings were designed to be permanent yet relocatable if the school demographics change. Cost savings resulted from no air conditioning. Operable windows were strategically placed to take advantage of cross ventilation. Electric furnaces were placed in each classroom to provide energy efficient heating, and overall building cost effectiveness. Low voltage lighting controls included daylight dimming capability to take advantage of the large amount of natural light utilized in the design. Modular became the only cost effective solution to complete 8 buildings during the school summer break. It’s questionable that site built buildings could have been constructed in the short window of time without huge amounts of labor working allot of overtime at great added cost.
Architectural Excellence : An all new look was given to what used to be the boxy standard two and three classroom modular. The exterior combines a gable center section with tall single slope roof sections on each side pitching from the tall front side to the low side at the back. The unique site finished front entry canopy is an extension of the factory roof but does not require site constructed footings for post supports. Structural bracing supports angle back and attach to the building creating a very attractive entry. All 8 sites utilized the same board and batten exterior with two paint schemes that allow the modular’s to blend in with the existing buildings. The interior tall open built up truss clerestory covers half of the classroom and brings in lots of natural light through the high windows. The design provides great acoustics for the schools musical program and added space for needed restrooms along with a janitor’s closet and secure storage with exterior entry for emergency disaster supplies.
