Architectural Excellence : The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians has inhabited the Sierra foothills for millennia. Their dedication to their tribal lands has resulted in a growing set of modern support services for the tribe & the surrounding communities. One sorely missed facility was a place for the young tribal members to play & learn, as well as a place for indoor functions & full tribal meetings.
The buildings needed to be designed to meet three important criteria; a constricted footprint, a sense of place in the tribal community, & to meld well with the surrounding countryside. The gymnasium is complete with a university quality hardwood floor, bleachers, multiple retractable goals & a state-of-the art floor protection system.
The building site was carefully designed to make the most of the background of native oaks & connection to the tribal ceremonial areas. Post & architectural truss-work entries match existing nearby structures. A central light well with clerestory windows enhances the gymnasiu

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The gymnasium’s exterior was sprayed with a new system of elastomeric coating, specifically designed to match the 3-coat 2 color stucco on the modular building – melding the two structures together with a cohesive aesthetic. This combination of two different off site constructions allowed the tribe to capitalize on the strengths & capability of both.
Green values are not neglected. The building has energy efficient low-e windows, high SEER furnaces & water heaters, low-flow shower heads & occupancy sensors in all rooms. The project was sited so as to take advantage of the morning shade from trees on the east side of the property. Modern has been certified as an EarthWISE company & is proud to have utilized recycled composition products & locally available sustainable forest products as the standard for all of the products used for this project, as well as a “zero-landfill” policy. In addition, all vendors were required to certify a sorting & recyclable scrap program for the project

Technical Innovation : Different methods of volumetric building are creating a synergy of styles previously unheard of; giving projects far better ranges of use & adaptability to site requirements. This is a great example of that synergy. A 5,000 sqft true modular building with classroom, commercial kitchen, library & children’s educational spaces married to a 10,000 sqft panelized gymnasium. The gymnasium is comprised of 42’ high x 40” interlocking all-weather insulated panels designed to overlap the modular construction along the 48’ joined area, giving a completely finished & weather-tight seal. This allows the commercial kitchen, with its wide serving area, to service the gymnasium itself.
The education center has three separate HVAC zones with internal ductwork sensors to prevent air handlers from competing with each other. The clerestory windows in the central light well of the gym are operable & electronically connected to the HVAC system to allow for release of heat gain & any CO2 build up.
