Architectural Excellence : With most major oil companies like Shell Canada, image and branding is as essential a part of their store offering as the product on the shelf itself. Store layouts, finishing details, lighting, features and operating systems all play an integral part in the design of their corporate stores. There can be no compromise or concessions between their site built stores and the ones built through the NRB modular process – in design or in quality. The interior is finished with ceramic floors, painted accented drywall interiors, and suspended acoustical ceilings. The exterior façade is an Alucobond architectural aluminum composite panel supplied and installed by NRB. Floor to ceiling glass allows full security viewing for the staff inside to oversee the pumps.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Because of the structural angle pre-installed on the building, the owners typical strip footings could be eliminated and pier footings used, which then became a cost and time savings. And although the time frame from start of production to final occupancy shows over 6 months – this was actually a part of a “pre-build” program where the owner has the store built in advance, while they are negotiating permits, so it is ready whenever the building permits arrive. This is something only modular construction and the NRB “pre-build” program can offer.

Technical Innovation : The building was divided into 3 modules because the site access was so restricted. This allowed NRB to utilize a smaller sized crane for better maneuvering and lower costs. By designing in a perpendicular building section at end, the complete electrical system and the cooler could be installed before the building left the plant. Bathroom and paypoint millwork could also be competed prior to shipping, thus, requiring minimal site installations to be done. Structural steel post and beam construction allows future modifications to be simpler than with full load bearing walls. Because in this particular instance, 3 walls were required to be painted block, the structural framing of the building was designed to carry the load of the site installed block with a structural angle at the base. Prepoured concrete floors in the building were completed at the plant, providing the permanence and performance of a typical slab on grade.
