Architectural Excellence : Design a portable self-contained holiday accommodation unit that would provide luxury comfort, be open to the natural surroundings, and offer a low carbon footprint to the appropriated area. 6m used shipping containers were chosen for the project. These are robust and can be shipped easily both to and from the Seychelle Islands. A drop down wooden deck unveils a retractable glass doors which fold back to provide a panoramic landscape view of the breath-taking scenery. Not only does the deck protect the doors from damage during transport, but also closes up the unit during the off-season against theft and the harsh marine climate experienced in the region. Isolated for privacy, these units blend into the surrounding environment, and when they reach the end of their life cycle, can be uplifted without leaving a trace of their existence, transported back to the main land, and recycled for future use.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The thought of executing this project with traditional construction materials is simply just not economical. Just the cost of transporting material would of made the project non-viable, let alone the transfer of personnel and associated costs. Complete yard assembly with plug and play functionality allowed for complete yard manufacture of the units prior to shipping and site delivery. Units were placed on site in their respective designated areas and once the ablution was “bolted on” required only the electrical supply to be connected. Being self contained, the ease of relocating any one of these modular units requires disconnection from municipal services. Once the unit is left its remaining impact on the environment, which it was placed is negligible. This leaves very little cost for site rehabilitation, there would be some recovery in the scrapping, and recycling of the modular units based.

Green Building Description : The island of Cosmoledo, an Atoll in the Seychelles, is a heavily restricted and monitored conservation zone. The client of our fishing village is only granted a short term lease to use the island after strenuous EIA assessments are done for the proposed business activities. Thereafter our Client must reapply for extension. Policy on this island is that all items are completely removable, no permanent alteration of the ecosystem can occur and there is no harmful effect to the island in anyway. This is monitored constantly and has led to green initiatives in monitoring energy usage per accommodation module. Efficient methods were used for sustainable energy practice: Water saving cisterns and aerated flow tap, dual flush WCS, insulated walls and roofs, shading devices – netting, use of inverter type HVAC units, LED lighting throughout the unit, large retractable folding doors provide not only panoramic views but allow for fresh ventilated air.

Technical Innovation : Built as individual modular sections 4000km from their final destination, units were supplied as plug and play. The only additional onsite work was the erection of the shade netting, which was undertaken by the developer. The wooden deck was designed for dual purpose, to provide security and preservation of the folding doors during transport, and as a fold down deck once the unit arrived on site. Additionally, a bolt on bathroom was designed at the rear of the unit, which housed a toilet, shower and hand basin. The bolt on option allowed for dismantlement when logistics were in play, and usage once the unit was placed. From a technical innovation & sustainability point, these units can be easily dismantled and removed to another location, without any serious fuss, and does not leave an ugly footprint of unusable rubble and remains.
