Additional Info

Award Winner : Satellite Shelters, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : This project consisted of providing classroom and cafeteria facilities to four separate campuses. Though each of the buildings had distinct and separate requirements, they were designed to provide a uniform occupant flow. The requirements called for servery and cafeteria/multi-purpose space at three sites. This space was either incorporated into a classroom facility or installed as a separate facility. Each individual building was connected via sidewalks or decks. These were design built to meet the specific constraints that each site presented. At two of the locations a site built EIFS exterior was applied to the street facing walls to enhance the image of the charter school.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The end user acquired this equipment to establish charter schools in new markets. Therefore, all modules were designed and installed so as to be relocated in the future. Once a student population necessitates, the goal for this customer is to replace these temporary buildings with permanent construction. At that time, these buildings would be relocated to a new location for establishment of new markets for the charter school.

Technical Innovation : The project required the inclusion of servery/cafeteria spaces. In addition to adhering to the code requirements for this type of occupancy, the end user also needed to utilize the cafeteria space as a multi-purpose room. This necessitated the use of 9’ ceiling heights. It also required that no support columns would be installed in this space. In the classroom/cafeteria building, the cafeteria was steel clear-span construction and the remaining portion of the building was standard truss, or wood, construction. Due to this hybrid of construction materials, it required additional design specificity so that all of the modules would fit correctly and seamlessly in the field.
