Architectural Excellence : This new church needed to fit into a predominately residential community, as well as meet newly instituted building appearance requirements for the city. Thus, the structure was designed to have a 4 to 12 pitch shingle site-installed roof with a large white cupola and painted lap-concrete siding. The building featured 12’ sidewalls with a 25’ ceiling in the sanctuary, painted sheetrock interior walls, painted interior door/window trims and a large front porch. The floorplan was designed with a central large foyer with three sets of doors leading to a 500 seat sanctuary (right side), with multiple mens’/womens’ restrooms (directly ahead), and the business offices/pastors study (left side). Multiple classrooms and a large children’s ministry were located off a hallway that was located at the end of the foyer.

Based upon comments made by the pastor (regarding the height and size of Samoan people), the decision was made to offer spacious 11’ interior ceilings in the foyer, offices,

Cost Energy Effectiveness : This building was designed to be substantially complete in-factory to minimize the costs. This structure was installed ground-level, to eliminate the need for handicapped ramps and metal railings. Energy efficiency was achieved by installing insulation values of R19, R21 and R30, using dual glazed windows, electric heatpumps with programmable thermostats and automatic shut-offs for the office lights.

Technical Innovation : This project utilized a “technical first” for our company and our factory, combining modular construction with “panelized” construction. In order to meet the requirements of our client, we needed to design and build a large sanctuary with high ceilings, which would not be feasible using modular construction (due to the dimensions of the seating area). Thus, the decision was made to build the panelized exterior walls of the sanctuary in-factory, and ship them on a flat-bed trailer to the site for erection. Once the walls were stood-up, they were braced, anchor bolts installed, and then the modular portion was crane set. Then, once the entire roof was installed, the insulation, windows and sheetrock was applied to the interior of the panelized walls.

The modular portion composed about 42% of the entire building and contained the foyer, restrooms, business office, children’s’ ministry, classrooms, children’s’ cry room, and central hallway. The panelized portion composed the rem
