Architectural Excellence : This private Christian school is a 7 modules, 5964 square feet complex. The center module, containing the schools multi occupant restrooms, is installed perpendicular to the other sections. The main challenge for the school was to have the building blend in with its surroundings and to meet the City’s criteria for esthetics, in order o obtain their permit. Modern Building Systems suggested breaking up the roofline along the 142 feet side of the building for a more appealing look. To accomplish that, the ceiling in the center section had to be lowered for the roof to be still pitched and to not sacrifice any square footage. The exterior roof transition and overlap had to be site installed. A dormer is covering the school’s main entrance to further enhance the exterior appearance.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The school is expecting to relocate to another site that allows for expansion in a few years, when they are outgrowing this building. The school’s intend is to relocate the modular building and place additional structures at that time as well. Modular, re-locatable space was the only cost efficient solutions for the school today that allowed them to already make a building their own and not waste money when it’s time to move.

Technical Innovation : Due to space constrains from existing easements and property lines, this building site allowed only for a long, narrow building. At the same time the City required the new building to comply with certain esthetics. The exterior had to be designed to not look like a standard portable classroom. The roof line was off set, lap siding was installed, the gables have a different color board and bat finish, and the wall hung mechanical units had to be covered by a lattice wall towards the street. The building was pit set so side walks could be poured to give a more permanent look.
