Architectural Excellence : As part of the University of Michigan’s Building upgrades; The Ross School of Business PhD candidates and entire Business Administrative Staff had to be relocated for a 3 year term while the existing was completely gutted and rebuilt. The solution was to create a spacious and comfortable space that was aesthetically pleasing and could fit on a rare empty corner lot, directly across the street from the Business School, with buildings close on both sides. The complex was made up of (22) 14’ x 50 modules to max out the lot capacity. Clear span beams make their way to posts that are strategically placed to essentially be lost in the cubicles. The exterior wall covering is a horizontal Hardie Siding which is somewhat unusual for a temporary structure; but an important element for this building’s placement.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : This part Academic, part Administrative building, which is accessible 24 hours a day, has it’s lighting controlled by a GreenMax Lighting Control System. Which is a micro-processor based, programmable control relay system. It utilizes a communication protocol over CAT6 data lines to communicate between control points in a distributed control scheme. This lighting control system utilizes an advanced high performance relay module. These robust relays perform at levels previously unavailable in the lighting control market. Flexible programming capability, Daylight Harvesting, zero cross technology and unmatched control power, create an energy management system of unparalleled performance.

Technical Innovation : In addition to the building needing to be spacious, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing; it had to be designed, transported and set up in record time. The (22) modules were built and shipped in a little over a month’s time. As an added challenge; the day we were to begin shipping units, we received a notice from the University regarding street closings for 2 weeks due to yet more construction activity. We had to ship, receive and set all of the units one at a time as there was no street staging in this highly congested area.
For maximum comfort and looks, the building has roof top HVAC units; a necessary requirement to achieve the proper zoning inside this 15,000 sq. ft. building and to keep the sides clean and give the building a more permanent look.
The University intends to move this building around the campus as needed for future projects to eliminate the need for building additional space.
