Architectural Excellence : The Thames Valley District School Board had an unusual request. They wanted to create a first of its kind "Smart School Portable." The objective was to control all lighting, heating and air conditioning from their remote head office situated in London, Ontario, more than fifty-five kilometres away. With sensors installed in the portable that determine a pattern of when classes are occupied, and when they require heating or air conditioning, instructions are then sent to the classroom utilities. These constant updates contribute to a measurable, and significant energy savings throughout the entire structure.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : All fifteen steel modular units used for the construction of this six classroom portable can easily be deconstructed and relocated elsewhere depending on variations in student populations and demographics. Because steel was used throughout, it is also easily recyclable. With the cooperation of all involved in the design and build of this unique "Smart School Portable" client objectives were easily met.

Technical Innovation : The Thames Valley District School Boards objective with the portable was designed to reduce energy consumption in a variety of ways. First, by eliminating six independent portables, and combining them all into one structure, all energy is shared and contained within the single, new structure. This eliminated the need for individual hydro hookups, and significantly reduced exposure to exterior surfaces, further reducing energy consumption. All modular units were built using recyclable steel flooring, framing and ceilings, plus all materials used throughout were consistent with LEED best practices guidelines.
