Architectural Excellence : Robert Louis Stephenson School, located in Pebble Beach, California, is one of the nation’s most prestigious preparatory schools, as well as one of the most costly to attend. Its students, parents and staff expect nothing but the best in facilities and accommodations.
The school initiated a renovation of its permanent dormitories in 2011, and needed high-quality temporary housing for displaced students,of high-quality and an appeal equal to the beauty of the school’s campus. The result was a near-perfect mix of aesthetic allure, and durable design.
The buildings, connected by massive post and beam cedar decks and verandas, have 5/12 pitched roofs with architectural shingles, skylights, cedar shingled siding complimenting existing buildings, and copper flashing. Interiors are completely finished in warm tones, taped and textured walls and ceilings, and high-end floor coverings. Beautiful detail is shown by the custom laminate counters, wall sconces and solid core French doors.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : “Green” values are not neglected either, showing that temporary space need not divorce itself from the need for environmentally friendly practices. Modern Building Systems, Inc. has been certified as an Earthwise company and is proud to have utilized recycled composition products and locally available sustainable forest products as the standard for all of the products used for construction of this project. The buildings have energy efficient Low-E windows with U-values of .31, high-efficiency water heaters and furnaces, low-flow shower heads and R-30 insulation. All rooms were equipped with occupancy sensors.
The outcome is a beautiful, if temporary, addition to an already beautiful campus; so much so that the students lucky enough to occupy these striking homes away from homes are already having second thoughts about moving into permanent quarters!

Technical Innovation : The buildings are in use 24 hours a day, seven days a week, housing high school students. Maintaining a healthy and productive building for heavy use was especially important to the school. Specialized exterior doors and door hardware designed for heavy use were incorporated into the plan, as were anti-bacterial finishes, which work to lower transmission of colds and viruses. In addition, air quality issues were also considered, and low-sonic rated fans and specialized air handlers with 15-20 air changes per hour were specified.
