Architectural Excellence : The building layout adopts 3 identical module sizes to best suit the 2000 mile journey. Exterior uses three different materials; a prefinished horizontal ribbed metal siding a custom flat architectural aluminum panel manufactured by NRB, both of which could be pre-installed prior to shipping; and a portion of site installed cultured stone all come together to offer a unique look for the owner. Architectural design features were incorporated at the modular split lines to allow for easy transition from one finish to another, achieving a well thought out exterior appearance. Large clear glass windows for viewing of the transit activity from the waiting room, a glass angled entrance, dark stone floor tiles, carpet and a bright bold colour scheme, all make the interior functional, clean and comfortable. The custom designed customer service desk maximizes use of all small areas, and a stepped bulkhead and interior stone accent walls give the interior a warm architectural flare.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building was designed with R20 walls and R 30 roof, poly-iso rigid insulation blanketing the exterior of the building, moving the dew point away from the interior of the wall cavities and providing a superior blanket of thermal protection to help conserve energy during the cold winter months. Commercial roof top gas fired HVAC equipment with economizers were used, with supplementary forced air heaters provided for occupant thermal comfort during peak winter months. The building was delivered at a time when Alberta was seeing peak prosperity but limited resources & high costs in the construction and material supply market. Despite the distance between the NRB plant and the site location, buying a permanent modular bus terminal from Ontario was more economically feasible than trying to build or buy locally. It was with this in mind, that NRB created the consistent module sizes and features to minimize the amount of site labor that would be necessary to complete the job.

Technical Innovation : The building footprint was carefully designed by the clients architect in conjunction with NRB to use best practices in steel and concrete modular construction methodology and to take advantage of the maximum amount of work being completed prior to shipping to a site over 2000 miles away. To keep site work to a minimum all the exterior materials were carefully laid to optimize pre-installation of material at the plant, and avoid the appearance of “mate lines” once installed. The interior was also carefully designed with the front vestibule in one module, customer service desk in second module and washrooms and service areas in third module to equally distribute weights in each section. Building was craned onto a pin–style foundation because of poor soil conditions and the NRB structural steel and concrete floor design easily spanned their pier points.
