Additional Info

Award Winner : United Rentals - Storage & Office Solutions

Architectural Excellence : This modular information center is designed with a reception area reminescent of an old fashioned ice cream parlor. Part of the ceiling is comprised of stamped metal panels & is finished with matching crown moulding. The reception counter is a granite bar with hand rubbed cherry casework & brass footrail. Floor coverings are custom tri-colored vinyl tile installed in a pattern & inlayed with the project logo. One private office, 2 restrooms, a topo model area & storage area complete the interior space plan. Ceilings in the balance of the building are custom stamped 2’X2’ suspended panels. Exterior is finished with cladboard siding & has a veranda type porch on three sides. Ceiling fans on the porch bring a touch of the past to the intent of the décor. Structural parapets & trusses create a two story look illusion. Custom scalloped asphalt shingles top off the gable roof which sports a custom made weather vane.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : By using two 16’ wide modules to create this building many dollars in transport and set up were saved over the alternative use of three 12’ wide modules. A sonotube foundation was used in-lieu-of a perimeter stem wall allowing the units to be rolled onto the supports without the use of a crane, again saving thousands of dollars. Due to the old fashion design of the modular structure, lattice type skirting was used to bring a taste of southern charm to the project. The siding used was a composite cladboard type product that could easily and cost-effectively carry over to the second story façade. A metered electrical panel and all of the mechanical ducting were installed at the factory saving on-site costs. The air handlers were installed in the dead space of the modular as opposed to installing in the trusses to save costs when the unit is relocated. In addition this building could be re-coded to residential if one was inclined to change the use

Technical Innovation : The technical innovation of this building involved the challenge of making it look like a two story building with the contraints of shipping heights. Parapet walls topped with trusses create a hip roof complete with faux windows and shutters. Jack Trusses create the porch and a trex decking material is used for the sweeping porch that surrounds three sides of the building. Pad mount heat pumps with air handlers in the ceiling provide the climate control. While there is no access into the trusses, the building appears to have a useable second floor. A bay window was added on site to complete the look of site built construction. Custom exterior doors installed on site include transom stained glass. Some ground floor windows are created as show boxes to keep the uniformity of the front elevation of the building.
