Award Winner : McDonald Modular Solutions, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : Barton Malow was selected as the Construction Manager for a five-year project constructing a new hospital on a confined site at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor Michigan. McDonald Modular Solutions designed and provided a new 4600 sq. ft. two story project management office. The modules were engineered to be crane lifted into place on a lot between a busy roadway, a dormitory and parking lot.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The cost of this project was a big consideration for the customer as they began this capital development. The building was value engineered using durable but reliable materials such as Hardi Panel exterior, 45 mil EPDM roofing, vinyl covered gypsum, textured gyp ceilings, and VCT flooring.

The use of sky lights provided the second floor area with a tremendous amount of ambient light, reducing the lamps required for daytime work plus the neighboring dorm gained a level of privacy.

In addition the insulation package, Tevek air infiltration wrap surrounded the building envelope to provide an extra level of comfort.

Technical Innovation : By designing a multi story solution McDonald Modular Solutions was able to house the required staff at the construction site instead of smaller groups at several site locations.

The building, consisting of two 36’ x 64’ stories, was designed with an internal staircase as well as a second exterior staircase to allow a free flow throughout the active complex. The building sits across a narrow sidewalk from a dormitory and care had to be taken to ensure office windows were not located where occupants could see into dorm room windows. Skylights were added to second story offices facing the dorm to allow natural light into the offices while maintaining dorm room privacy.

The University was adamant that no trees were damaged or removed during the placement of this complex. A hydraulic crane was specified with the required reach to lift the six 12’ x 64’ boxes and clear all the obstacles on the difficult site.
