Award Winner : Aries Building Systems, LLC
Architectural Excellence : Aries installed 3 modular complexes on a below grade concrete foundation, now serving as the schools' administration, library, Pre-K and music classrooms. As new construction is the first thing noticed upon arrival, consistency between existing/new construction was critical to the design and functionality of the spaces to meet the needs of the student body. The exterior consists of a turnkey solution, including site design using brick masonry and stucco, onsite built metal roofs and store front windows/doors. On the exterior Aries installed flatwork, a galvanized metal canopy system over walkways and an architectural designed steel portico with cedar roof planking covering the front entrance to the Administration building. Interior was designed to withstand heavy use consisting of onsite installed kinetic carpet, tape/textured walls, elevated ceilings, accent walls and custom cabinetry. The finished structures offer a visual contrast of elevations across the modulars to set it apart
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Aries worked with the staff to value engineer, keeping costs low in the midst of the pandemic. The modular additions provided the necessary square footage and headcount, at a reduced cost of traditional brick and mortar buildings. The Aries team designed and installed elevations matching the existing campus, while providing unique visual elevations that the current facilities did not provide. A mechanical split system was designed and installed in leu of traditional wall pack units, to provide a mechanical system that keeps operation costs low and simultaneously eco-friendly. Another cost-effective measure was the redesign of the metal canopy systems over the sidewalks. This allowed Aries to cut costs of installation, while simultaneously eliminating constant repainting and gutter maintenance that the school encountered on their previously installed canopies. The hinged roof design in the elevated portions allowed a speedy install, reducing freight costs from the factory to the site.

Technical Innovation : Faced with the problem of having to install new buildings on the drainage side of campus, the Aries team installed multiple drainage systems, designed to safely divert water away from the engineered poured foundation. Aries installed underground French drains, trench drains, swells, and graded the site in order to keep the foundations dry should the site experience heavy rainfall. Green concrete alternatives, including Tru-Grid were used to minimize impervious coverage onsite, to help ease drainage and avoid increasing the size of retention ponds on the tight campus footprint. The roofing system was designed and built as a hinged roof system, that could bear the weight of an onsite installed metal roofing system. Upon completion of installation, this design allowed Aries to then lift the roofs by crane to the desired height (17’). The design and installation of the hinged roof system gave the end user elevated ceilings and differing building elevations that the school desired.
