Architectural Excellence : Portland School District was in need of two 1,792 Sq. ft. modular classrooms after a fire destroyed two of their existing relocatable classrooms. The district needed to quickly and affordably replace the old structures with new classroom space. The project consisted of two 28’x64’ modular classrooms with two 12’x28’ stand-alone restroom units. A steel canopy and ramp system was built to make the classrooms aesthetically pleasing and provide a climate controlled environment for the high schoolers moving between classrooms.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The SAGE Classroom was the perfect cost-effective solution for the district looking to purchase a healthier learning environment. The SAGE Classroom reduces maintenance costs, and the lifespan of the building is twice that of a standard relocatable classroom. There were several cost-effective building features that were attractive to the school district including BIOPCM. BIOPCM Phase Change material was used in the walls to act as a thermal mass to stabilize the indoor temperature. Large overhangs were designed to protect the classroom from unwanted heat gain. Low-velocity ceiling fans and high ceilings aid in ventilation and energy efficiency. Skylights, along with larger clerestory windows, were installed in each classroom to add natural lighting and reduce the amount of energy used.

Technical Innovation : The school district was looking to purchase sustainable classrooms, and the Smart Academic Green Environment (SAGE) was the perfect fit. High-quality, environmentally safe building materials were used to eliminate toxins in the air. Bio-based flooring and non-VOC paint were used to eliminate pollutants in the classroom. The innovative modular design increases the buildings flexibility, reduces site infrastructure and environmental impact.
The district was not only looking for a sustainable option, but relocatable as well. The classrooms will be relocated when the campus undergoes renovations in the coming years. The unique steel floor structure was designed to aid in the portability and reduce infrastructure while allowing for several relocations.
Lincoln High School is the oldest public school in Portland, Oregon and is located on historic land. Special precautions were taken during construction to ensure adherence to the historic landscape including erosion control and safety.
