POINT UNIVERSITY
Additional Info
Award Winner : Satellite Shelters, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : This 24,000 sq.ft. army barracks building was renovated this past summer, modified and recertified to house college student athletes in this temporary dormitory for Point University located in Lanett AL. The renovated building is comprised of 36 2-person dormitory rooms, several counselor rooms, business offices and 8 bathroom/shower modules. Point U worked with Webb Construction Group who took the lead in the redesign of the existing barracks building to accommodate the required student housing. During the modification, Webb Construction Group added over 1300 linear feet of interior walls, 40 solid core interior doors and redesigned the entire sprinkler system to comply with local fire and safety codes for the renovated floor plan.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : By utilizing a used modular building, which was prepped and ready to ship 5 weeks after the award, the dollars saved on the building alone were estimated to be just shy of half a million dollars vs. building a new custom dormitory building. One of the primary challenges Satellite faced during the permitting phase was that the original building was only coded for SC and GA. In order to install the building and permit it properly according to the state of AL, both Satellite and Point U endured a vigorous recertification process and obtained the seal of approval from the Alabama Manufacturing Housing Association after 3 weeks of design and code compliance reviews.

Technical Innovation : The renovated structure contains 8 self-contained bathroom/shower modules complete with shower stalls, toilets, wash sinks, and washer/dryer appliances. These 8 modules were the only floors out of 24 that required no modification. To accommodate the electrical output required by the clothing dryers, these modules were originally designed with 22KAIC breakers to support the dryers. Dehumidification units were also installed on these 8 modules to prevent excessive moisture residue. Also included in the original design were the installation of drip guards above all exterior doors and windows to ensure a tighter seal and provide a stronger barrier against potential water leaks
