Architectural Excellence : This functional, efficient, 9th Grade Academy addressed the owner’s budget and schedule requirements allowing them to increase their enrollment. The 141’ central corridor is lined on both sides with administrative offices, restrooms, and classrooms. The end of the corridor opens into the cafeteria complete with a warming kitchen. This free standing academy is located on the Plymouth Educational Center main campus in Detroit, Michigan.
Architectural design, construction methods and planning enabled this 9,870 square foot permanent facility to be completed in less than 2 months from ground breaking to occupancy. The finish floor elevation of the (12 unit) 12’ x 70’ modular assembly is accessible at grade from the main campus. The building profile, exterior finish selections and placement on the property compliments the multiple styles of the neighboring buildings.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : All of the lighting is controlled by room occupancy sensors, along with dual switching in the classrooms allowing the energy usage of the lights to be cut in half during class instruction time. The modules were installed over a conditioned masonry crawl space. This system protects the plumbing from freezing and assures that the floor system stays dry. The HVAC systems in the classrooms and office areas are individually controlled with programmable thermostats and CO2 sensors maintaining fresh air supply. This building was designed with energy efficiency in mind as it was constructed with 2” x 6” exterior walls, R22 wall insulation, a continuous 1-1/2” foam board insulation on the exterior, R22 insulation in the floor, R38C insulation in the roof and Low E glass in the windows.

Technical Innovation : The building design addressed the requirements for the extension of the campus technology to the new academy. The technology included the installation of smart boards, smart projectors and a computer network system. Security cameras, telephone system, fire alarm system and CATV from the existing building were extended to the new modular facility making the entire campus integrated. The main entrance includes a secure interior vestibule requiring visitors to be “buzzed” in for added school security. Design and preparation for these systems and components were provided by the manufacturer for ease of installation on site.
