Architectural Excellence : After a 30 year drought of new nuclear reactors in the United States, at least five are now under construction in three Southeastern states, the star among them is Plant Vogtle, whose proposed Units 3 & 4 became the first to be granted federal loan guarantees designed to jump start the nuclear industry. During the construction phase for Units 3 & 4, located in Waynesboro, GA, Shaw Power Group required temporary office space for up to 1000 employees, subcontractors, and vendors. Among the six temporary buildings provided by Satellite Shelters, one was a 382' X 195' 84 Plex modular building that will serve as the new administration building. This modular building merges most departments under a single roof and can accommodate more than 600 employees, with 59 offices, 487 cubicles, two data rooms and a document control area. The new administration building labeled 120 Building by Shaw, is one of the largest modular buildings ever installed in the Southeastern United States.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : One of the primary concerns during the design phase was the need to adequately heat and cool such a large modular building with so many occupants. By combining thirteen roof mount split level units with fifty-six standard end mounts, Satellite and our factory affiliate, Design Space Inc., designed and delivered a high effeciency HVAC system customized for a maximum occupant load of 600+ employees. The use of insulated commercial grade aluminum windows performed double duty by not only assisting with sound reductions, but also contributing to an energy efficient building envelope.

Technical Innovation : At over 74,000 sq.ft, the obvious challenge during the design phase was how to merge dozens of departments under one roof and maintain both a functional and aesthetically pleasing work environment. To achieve this goal, the floor plan for the building was divided into 4 sections, each section housing several departments responsible for specific phases of the 6 year, 15 billion dollar project. In addition to employee work space, there was also a need for meeting rooms and dining areas to accommodate so many people. To accomplish this, our design team incorporated 10 conference rooms with 3 adjacent gallery kitchens strategically placed throughout the building. Another concern for Shaw was the vulnerability of the buildings to severe thunderstorms, a common occurence in south Georgia. To protect the enormous amount of servers, phone and data lines in the building, Satellite installed a lightning protection system and surge suppression on the panels that supplied power to the buildings.
