Architectural Excellence : The project consists of two modules of 14’ by 35’. The 28’ x 35’ finished space includes a procedure room, control room, waiting area, dressing rooms and an equipment room. The modules were crane set onto a concrete perimeter foundation in an area between two existing buildings. The exterior was stucco with recessed lateral and horizontal striping meant to mimic the existing structure’s architectural panels. In addition, a custom steel canopy was constructed to connect the new modules to the existing building. The canopy was built to mirror the outline of an adjacent building. The effect was a seamless transition of new space between older existing structures. The interior walls were painted with a textured brush finish that is contrasted by a blue, brown and white checkerboard vinyl tile floor. The checkerboard lends a sense of geometry to the open waiting area.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : In considering whether to build a permanent addition to their Radiology department or enable a longer-range master plan of new hospital construction, the choice of a modular imaging enclosure became the best of both worlds. The building is completely relocatable and could potentially be moved without uninstalling the magnet. This would save thousands in lost revenue, increased expenses and would conserve the cryogen inside of the magnet itself. If and when the customer moves ahead with an expansion to the radiology department the modular buildings adaptability would enable them to place it anywhere on the campus.

Technical Innovation : There are shielding requirements for MRIs. The shielding contractor shipped the RF panels to the factory and sent installers who, working in conjunction with the factory, were able to do a 90% install in the factory. Some MRI manufacturers require a steel free zone underneath the magnet. In order to accomplish this, the factory used welded aluminum cross beams bolted to the steel members under the MRI. A permanent ladder with locking guard was attached to the side of the modular structure so that access to the roof and HVAC systems would be less cumbersome.
