Architectural Excellence : The 38 module two-story addition was designed to include all amenities currently contained in the existing school including architectural finishes, mechanical and electrical systems, energy management, data and life safety. The new connecting corridor runs perpendicular to the addition along the original wall of classrooms that had looked out to the school yard. To help offset the fact that those rooms would now become interior spaces, the design used the existing brick face and windows as one wall of the new corridor by adding support posts for the corridor roof between the windows, and added large windows to the other side giving the now interior spaces, day lighting and views. The modular addition has brick detailing to match the existing school, along with clear anodized architectural aluminum panels on the corridor face and on the corner entrance ways. The interior is brightly finished and has abuse resistant, painted gypsum board, acoustical ceilings and vinyl tile floors.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The school board had to keep the on-site disruption to an absolute minimum for the safety of this high school population that was already well over capacity with constant activity, crammed classrooms and full parking lots. It was determined that building this 20,000 sq ft addition off site during the late winter/early spring was the only answer, with the caveat being the entire complex of 38 modules could not arrive at site before June 30 and had to be occupied for the second week of September. This meant that significant construction costs were saved with reduced on-site protection, mobilization and general activity. This compressed time frame at site drove some of the design decisions, such as pre-installing all the mechanical room equipment in advance at the plant to reduce commissioning time at site.

Technical Innovation : The building is non-combustible structural steel post and beam construction with pre-poured concrete floors. A unique addition is the mechanical room located on the second floor, as it was completely equipped at the plant with all the pumps for the heating system, ventilation air handling unit as well as data hubs and electrical distribution, and then craned in to place. This module with house keeping pads, weighed in excess of 60,000 lbs. The project also has a passive chilled beam system with primary air. Chilled beams recess mounted in the suspended ceiling provide water source heating and cooling to each classroom. Chilled beams work in conjunction with a dew-point sensor and BAS to detect when condensation will occur and will modify the chilled water temperature and/or flow rate to prevent this condition. Chilled beams allow the air handling unit to be significantly downsized and are designed to mix air with primary ventilation air at the beam without the use of powered fans.
