Architectural Excellence : With continual input from the customer, our challenge throughout the design process was to meet the City’s objectives of relating architecturally with the somewhat contradictory styles of the other surrounding City buildings (Library and City Hall), as well as to project a Northwest contemporary style. Additionally, the interior layout was designed to incorporate a free-flowing traffic area for patrol officers, adequate office and physical training areas, a secure evidence room and armory, men’s and women’s locker and shower rooms, and a prisoner intake-booking area. A publicly-accessible conference room doubles as a community meeting room, and an additional interview office was provided for the part-time use of another joint police agency. A large portico, bounded by Northwest River Rock columns, offers visitors needed protection from Northwest rains, as they enter a welcoming foyer.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : As described above, the hinged roof system utilized in lieu of conventional trusses resulted in substantial savings of money and construction time for the customer. Because this was a public works project, all work performed on site was required to be done at prevailing wage rates, so by completing as much of the roof as possible in the factory, we were able to reduce significantly the amount of expensive carpenter labor. In addition to high density insulation and high SEER heat pumps with programmable thermostats for maximum energy efficiency, room lighting throughout the building is controlled with occupancy sensors. The City was also able to save considerably on their overall project cost by performing a great deal of the site utility work with their own Public Works Department.

Technical Innovation : To tie in with the other surrounding City buildings which have a mixture of 15 and 25-year old architectural styles, a pitched roof design was imperative for the new police building. As an alternative to the traditional method of site-installing roof trusses, we instead engineered a hinged longitudinal rafter system which resulted in significant time savings and greater project site control. The hinged roof sections which were factory-installed on the modules were simply lifted from a flat position as the modules were being craned onto the foundation, up to the full pitched roof height. The amount of site roofing was also minimized in this way, which translated to having the building completely weathered in within only 3 working days.
